Thread Den's light-filled first floor premisesI have been meaning to visit Thread Den in North Melbourne for a while now... I finally went down last week, and had a lovely chat to co-owner Kylie about this gorgeous little craft haven tucked away above the main drag of Errol st.
Thread Den was opened last year by local Melbourne crafters Kylie, Melissa and Tamille. It's such a great and unique idea... The space incorporates a sewing lounge and an independent clothing store, stocking vintage clothing and accessories, as well as local designer labels (including the fashion labels of co-owners Kylie Shepherd and Melissa Kramer - 'Oh Bluebird' and 'Ishee' respectively).
Thread Den runs a variety of sewing classes in the sewing lounge - and they're tailored to the needs of busy young people. In many of the classes you go home with your creation after only 1 session... projects include tote bags, screenprinting, and coming soon - tutu making! You can also drop in for hourly hire of the facilities at a very reasonable rate (just $7 an hr), with free staff assistance should you require it. AND how great is this idea - thread den social nights are informal nights where you can bring along all those vintage finds that need altering, mending or re-working.... The Thread Den folk will help you perfect these pieces in a fun, chatty environment more like a tea party than a sewing class!
