Saturday in Design - Sydney

Spence and Lyda... so so gorgeous always. But especially this weekend! Look at those flowers. Lovely.

Artist Lisa Hoelzl paints a beautiful cacti-inspired mural on the Spence and Lyda windows during Saturday in Design.

So, Saturday in Design was on in Sydney this weekend... and you know I loved last year's event in Melbourne so so much... so I figured I should check out the Sydney version this year. But, I must admit I was a little teeny tiny bit disappointed :(

Don't get me wrong - there was lots to see, and as usual each participating showroom made a huge effort to entertain, with product launches, beautiful custom displays and installations, catering, drinks and coffee... but... it just lacked some kind of buzz! I just couldn't help but compare to last year's fantastic efforts and atmosphere - remember Format Furniture's amazing red tulips? Now that was special! Also, the shuttle buses between venues this year were much less reliable than in previous years - there never seemed to be one when I needed one, so I found myself walking and cabbing the whole day. Blah.

ANYWAY you know me, I still found some fabulous things to get excited about :) My favourite showrooms were Spence and Lyda, Ke-Zu and Hub... and the coveted Design Files best catering award (!!) this year goes to Schiavello! Hee. Nothing like a mini-hamburger to get me excited.

Enjoy the eye-candy below!

More Spence and Lyda gorgeousness. Missoni rugs. Stunning.

Spence and Lyda - Hooray for well behaved kids! ( And Nintendo DS).

Spence and Lyda again - have you ever seen more beautiful colours?

Spence and Lyda close-ups

Spence and Lyda - Crazy giant floral Missoni rugs. Almost wrong... but so, so right! Swoon.

Schiavello - Joost-inspired installations (not sure if these are his or not?)... and these couches seem almost Le Corbusier LC2-esque to me...? But not quite as nice. ;)

Schiavello food. Mmmm.

Living Edge was bustling.... love the kooky Moet cork mini-furniture competition! Crazy but good.

Crowd pleasers.

New stuff at Living Edge! HOW good is the new Airia desk by Kaiju Studios for Herman Miller? It was turning a lot of heads... such a cute shape.

LaunchPad at Living Edge. Crazy cute lamp - Porcini Canopy by Jaquie Hagan and Madeleine Potter of Memake. Fantastic Flintstones-esque 3-legged tables - PegLeg by Tomek Archer or Tomahawk Studios.

More Launchpad at Living Edge - United Stool by Kristian Aus of Autumn Products, and ATTA Coffee Table by Nicholas Cairns.

Very kooky little video project about sustainability in design called One Thing I've Learnt... hilarious! Check it out online here!

Ke-Zu had some great stuff and made a real effort withe installation / display...

Ke-Zu child labour! ha, no not really... but it was a bit cute to have a 10 year old manning the lift to the second floor... and then his another little helper scanning visitors in at the entrance! Hope they got some good pocket money for their efforts!

Ke-Zu fabulous lights.

Jardan. Love that leather floor cushion.

Jardan - still loving that new cabinet, ever since seeing it at the Design Market in Melbourne last week.

Hub. I love this light to death. TO DEATH.

Hub - Am completely obsessed with Patricia Urquiola's Shanghai Tip sofas. Beautiful. Also Hub's accessories and ceramics... always stunning. And actually mostly quite reaosnably priced.

More Hub accessories... love.

Hub sweet treats... and gorgeous glassware.

Stylecraft was popping with people early at 10.30am! Fab installations... freshly squeezed juice... And a chair giveaway too!

Nice to see a bit of green at Mico.

Poliform is better in Melbourne actually.... but still all the gorgeous usual suspects on show.

Poliform details - love the indoor plants and those eco-biodgradeable plates! Fab.

Poliform details - origami animals and Boris Becker books? What a combination!

  1. Hi Lucy
I went along for Saturday morning - your photos have come out so much better than mine!! I loved the Hub candles also and my pregant friend also gave Hub top marks for lindt chocs, biccies and turkish delight as she was running out of steam at that point. great photos

  4. shucks, i am so disorgainsed, can;t believe i was in sydney on the weekend and didn't think of going to any of the design things - silly me!!but it is great as always to get the virtual best of the best via you!! and i LOVE the missoni floral rugs, just love them.

  5. gah!! thank you for this. although you say you may have been disappointed. the eye candy for me now is great all the same!!

    Renee x

  6. Hi Lucy,

Funny, I went to the exact same places on Saturday and took the same pics!! Really liked the Chandon mini-chair exhibition at Living Edge, really funny and there was a good vibe in the room. And totally agree with you, the catering award went to Schiavello! The cheese and Italian pastries were yummy. I'm a big fan of your blog, it would have been cool to run into you! Will you be staying in town for more Sydney Design events?

  7. Wow what comprehensive coverage. Is that a Gervasoni Ghost lounge (the white one)?

  8. love the black eiffel base on those eames modernica chairs and love missoni. love those bowls with the timber lids from hub too, but can't remember what they're called. if i do i'll post another comment. awesome post as per usual lucy :)

  9. No way, Living Edge wins for catering! Little Creatures Bright Ale and longrain curries = bliss.

  10. Thanks so much for all your comments!

Folder of Ideas - Oh thankyou! I just took about 500 photos and culled it down to the 20 good ones! YES How good were the Hub sweet treats! I put 2 lindt choccies in my bag for later!

Mazspazz - Thankyou! Yep nothing like a little interiors eye-candy to brighten Monday morning!

Evie - Thankyou for your sweet comment! Yes Missoni rugs - amazing. Love love love them. xxxxx

Ii-ne-kore - OH ho you were here too? what a coincidence :) YES those Missoni rugs are so fab... the colours are incredible...

Renee - oh yes in retrospect looking back at all these shots it wasn't really that disappointing overall... Each showroom was fab, but there just wasn't much of a buzz linking everything together? Or something. ANYWAY thanks for your sweet words about the eye-candy :)

myriamthi - OH what a coincidence! We must have the same taste :) Actually sadly I head back to Melb tomorrow... :( It had been such a perfect and full trip I am quite sad to go! But must come back very soon!

far out brussel sprout - Oh thanks! I wish it could have been more comprehensive - I didn't get out to Alexandria on the day.. most of these shots are from Surry Hills showrooms... there's just too much to squeeze into one day! AND NO that is not a Ghost Lounge... but very similar huh? It is actually a new design from Australian sofa manufacturer Jardan... perhaps a good Ghost Lounge alternative without the $$$ pricetag??

  11. I had a fabulous day too. This was my third SiD and I must say I think it was much better organised than in previous years. So many more buses and cars this time to get us all around. It was an exhausting but exhilirating 8 hours. Pity you're not hanging around Lucy, maybe next time, eh?

  12. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your post on Saturday in Design. Couldn't make it so the images are great, looking forward to next year in Melbs.

  13. Oh my goodness - overload of inspiration. Beautiful shots! I am in love with the Airia desk.

  14. Great images Lucy and a most comprehensive report. My vote for catering has to go to KE-ZU with their Sushi by Design. Hot idea with 10 designers invited to design a piece of sushi and then made b Sushi Choo at Ivy and served lunchtime at KE-ZU. 1000 pieces gone in 7 minutes flat! Hey, KE-ZU has some excellent vidoe coverage on their website...2 of showroom which is good for product, the other the people. or search Saturday Indesign KEZU in YouTube

  15. Hi Lucy,

Great coverage on SiD. The Vertical Gardens at the Schiavello showroom are Joost Bakker's design as they are manufactured by Schiavello.
