Dead Man Espresso

Dead Man Espresso in South Melbourne - these shots kindly supplied by Brad Dunn

Dead Man Espresso is South Melbourne's newest coffee haunt, and I must say it is rather fabulous. I LOVE the architecture of the building - those sleek timber screens and louvered shutters are so beautiful :) (The building was designed and built by Momentum Builders whose offices are on the second floor).

Dead Man proprietors Luke Mutton and partner Kylie Mackinilay used to work at nearby St Ali before going out on their own, and are still great mates with Melbourne's coffee king Mark Dundon (now of Seven Seeds and Brother Baba Budan). Dead Man also serves Seven Seeds coffee (of course!)

One other little detail to point out is Dead Man's stellar logo - understated yet edgy, it is, unsurprisingly, the work of Sydney graphic superstars We Buy Your Kids! NICE work.

Dead Man Espresso identity by WBKY - awesomeness.

Anyway, you should totally pop in for a coffee next time you're in South Melbourne. But don't take my word for it - take Matt Preston's!

LOVE the screening on the facade of the building and those louvered shutters on a pulley-system!? Fabulous.

Dead Man Espresso bike rack. Very NYC :)

  2. This really would to be one of the Best Cafes in Melbourne. The food is incredibly ambitious and tasty, and the coffee would be one of the best in Melbourne, which is a big deal, being Melbourne probably rates quite highly overseas.

  3. As much as I love St Ali, it's so nice to have an alternative nearby. And Luke, Kylie and their team always offer lovely service!

  7. I visited this cafe this weekend and can I just say that my taste buds were dumbstruck!! Everything about the place was perfect. Perhaps it was just the atmosphere and being my first time in Melbourne I was awed by everything but YOU have to try this!
